Eating your way through all the food in Vegas is a tough feat. I think I read somewhere if you ate 3 meals a day in a different restaurant/cafe/bar each time on The Strip it would take something ridiculous like 421 years to complete. So when we say there’s the choice of anything we mean it!
We’ve eaten in a lot of different restaurants in Vegas and before we go we have a list of places we’d like to try based on recommendations or places we’ve seen online and think will fall into our remit of great food at good prices.
In the past, we’ve visited places such as Wicked Spoon, Mercato Della Pescheria, McCalls Steakhouse, Sugar Factory, Giada and many more. This time we kept tabs of where we ate and how likely we would be to firstly recommend and secondly return. Here are a few places to consider when deciding where to eat in Las Vegas.
Hexx (at Paris)
Located in the former Sugar Factory location, Hexx is an upbeat coll and trendy brunch stop and cocktail haven and an ideal place to stop if you’re looking to watch the Bellagio fountains.
We purchased a Groupon for Hexx and visited on the morning of my birthday. Opting for the Revolution Cocktail ($50) which came in a punch bowl. It certainly did pack a punch and lasted two of us the entire meal.
For food, we decided to choose two appetisers to see how we got on with the intention to add more as we went (if we needed). We selected the Artichoke and Spinach Dip (which is a favourite American dish of mine). This is a thick baked dip including artichoke hearts, creamy cheeses roasted garlic served with tortilla chips. At Hexx it was served on a square skillet and the portion size was really great for sharing. The dip was freshly baked and the tortilla chips were delicious. Would highly recommend when choosing food in Vegas.
We also opted for the Surf & Turf Sliders ($22) – lobster, short rib, slaw aïoli, fries and brioche buns. Two sliders were well filled with short rib and tender meaty lobster. The slaw complimented the meat perfectly and although Brioche isn’t my favourite bun, the buns were soft and delicious. The fries from Hexx are incredible, the way they are seasoned really finishes every dish off as they have a unique and exquisite flavour.
In passing conversation with the server I mentioned it was my birthday and when we were all finished up he brought over a small ice cream cake with a candle. It was a lovely gesture and really did add to our experience.
Back for more food in Vegas
Enjoying Hexx that much we returned back towards the end of the week for breakfast. This time we sat inside instead of out and whilst it was lovely, I much prefer the vibe of being on the street outside when enjoying food in Vegas.
This time for brunch I opted for the Chilaquiles which kind of was their own take on Huevos Rancheros. It featured chicken, roasted salsa tortilla chips, two eggs avocado mole, sour cream, asadero. The plate was huge and again fresh and tasty.
My Mum opted for the Turkey Club, which was served with applewood smoked bacon lettuce, tomato, herb mayo avocado, cranberry challah on waffles. At first, she said it was a bizarre flavour although she did really enjoy it!
We both really enjoyed the two trips we made to Hexx and if you’re looking for a nice breakfast or brunch we do certainly recommend visiting.
The Buffet (at Wynn)
Having played Wynn Slots (download it on Android and Apple here) we had accrued enough points for a complimentary buffet. Priced at the holiday price of around $50 (plus taxes) this was a fabulous saving and well worth playing the game if you’re looking to save money on food in Vegas. You can visit the buffet twice in a calendar month via the complimentary rewards. We did choose to pay the $22.99 each to upgrade to bottomless wine, beers and cocktails.
The buffet dining room is gorgeous, although hectic, it is beautiful and had gorgeous festive displays when we were visiting. The buffet is separated into a couple of sections including a pastry and continental style breakfast selection with green juices, meats and cheeses as well as yoghurts and parfaits. We only visited for brunch so this may change when the dinner crossover happens.
There’s a soup & salad bar and then a selection of cooked fish dishes, the lobster benedict was divine! Not so much the crab slider which was ½ a small deep-fried crab, claws, shell and all! There’s a pasta station. Some fried goodies including breaded chicken and pizzas. Next up there’s a carvery station with some delicious meats carved in front of you. As it was Thanksgiving the day after we visited we had a proper Turkey Dinner. Lots of different vegetables (including some crazy sweet and savoury combinations). A hot Oriental section and sushi bar follow, with finally cold seafood, primarily shrimp (prawns) and crabs legs.
Sweet tooth
Finally in a separate room the desserts, these small pots and plates are crafted with precision and are incredible to see. With cakes, tortes, ice cream and more it certainly is a sweet lover’s paradise and one of the best buffets for food in Vegas.
There really is something for everybody. The food is cooked and served in small batches which is great as it means it’s always fresh. The quality is fabulous and there’s absolutely no rush by anybody. The staff waiting tables are lovely and very attentive even when it’s busy. The Wynn Buffet comes a close second behind The Wicked Spoon at Cosmopolitan (it’s my favourite), however, I do 100% recommend a visit to the Wynn, especially if you can redeem a free buffet.
Charlie’s Burger & Grill (at Wynn)
Looking for some food in Vegas at the Wynn with a bit of atmosphere but also pretty laidback we stumbled into Charlie’s Burger & Grill as it was packed full with people watching the college football on. A basic beer and burger joint we both opted for the Chilli Burger ($20.50) which was served with a huge portion of fries.
The burger was tasty and of course massive! It had Chilli con Carne on the top to give it some serious flavour so was a little messy. It was really tasty and the patties were really lovely. My only complaint, as with all American food, is that it’s served tepid whereas I like my food scalding hot!
We did enjoy our meal although a little basic. We probably wouldn’t return back to Charlie’s as it was nothing special and the burger was nice but didn’t blow us away and there are plenty of other places to grab food in Vegas and honestly, I think if I had made burgers at home using the best electric smoker, I would have ended up doing a better job.
MGM Buffet (at MGM Grand)
The MGM Buffet was another comped buffet through playing myVegas (download on Android and Apple here now). Previously having never visited we were excited to try this buffet out. The buffet at the MGM Grand also includes unlimited wine and beer in the buffet price. You can, of course, pay an additional $15.99 plus taxes for unlimited cocktails.
The dining area isn’t huge however it is really lovely. Again there’s a great selection of dishes including soups and salads. Mexican dishes, Indian and Asian dishes. Lots of rice and curries dishes as well as traditional American cuisine including fried chicken and chowder. There are also dishes incorporating French Cuisine and Italian Cuisine. The MGM Buffet also offers a carvery station similar to the Wynn. As well as this there’s also an omelette making station.
The dessert station is located across the dining room separately from the savoury food and features brownies, crumbles, individual cakes and compotes as well as ice cream. The food is pretty good and tasty. It certainly is somewhere that we’d return too, especially with a myVegas reward if you’re looking for buffet food in Vegas.
Sugar Factory (at Fashion Show Mall)
Sugar Factory used to be my go-to when in Vegas but the last couple of times it’s been a bit off. We also visited the New York and Florida locations and to be honest I think they’ve had great success and then got a little complacent.
I always have the Big Cheesy and a goblet as standard. The goblets have got smaller and the wait staff don’t make the same fuss over them as they used to. The food was pretty poor compared to our last visit to Vegas and our waiter was obnoxiously rude and extremely dismissive of us.
In addition to the awful service we received, we had a Groupon. The same one we’ve used at Sugar Factory the previous two years we’ve dined there and the waiter wouldn’t honour it. If you’re looking for somewhere with good burgers and great cocktails try Black Tap at the Venetian or my new favourite Hexx when looking for good food in Vegas.
PBR (at Planet Hollywood)
Prior to arriving, we had purchased a bottomless beer and burger Groupon for $44.25 for both of us. In hindsight, we probably didn’t make the most of the bottomless beer. Simply because we couldn’t drink lots of it and ended up only having 3 pints each. Which still at $9 a pint or whatever it was this is still a great saving. The burger was just a standard burger, nothing special about it. Saying that it was quite tasty and the fries were well….fried.
We did decide to have desserts afterwards as we were just enjoying the atmosphere of being outside. Mum had the Apple Pie and said it was tasty as it was full of cinnamon and tasted like Christmas. I had the Snookie which was a cookie in a skillet it was nice but really sickly.
Admittedly PBR is not the best for food as it’s a proper Rodeo bar. However I do love it for the atmosphere especially as all the college football was on, it’s one of my must-visit bars when I’m in Sin City especially when they have bull riding competitions and things on in the bar.
Eataly (at Park MGM)
Having heard people raving about Eataly we decided to give it shot one afternoon after craving a bottle of wine and pasta for lunch. That’s how holiday lunches are supposed to be right? The place is impressive and really channels rustic, European market. It’s full of hustle and bustle and offers a fishmonger, pasta place, boulangerie, wine bar amongst other things. I headed to grab a bottle of wine ($49) and then ordered 2 bowls of pasta ($50 for 2 bowls!!!!!!) I was given a buzzer and had to return to collect my tepid almost children’s portion from a hatch when it buzzed. Like an American food court, not an Italian pasta place.
I opted for the mushroom parpadelle and it was okay like I said, it was served tepid and I like my food hot especially when I’ve paid the equivalent of feeding a small Italian village for a month in pasta for the price of 2 bowls. There, of course, weren’t many mushrooms and my sauce was just a little thin and sparse for my liking. The wine was really really lovely though. If that’s any consolation? It wasn’t just us, many people around us expressed their disappointment too.
It’s a lovely place to walk through and enjoy the busy hustle and bustle, and of course to try and imagine you’re in a busy market in Italy, but it’s certainly not somewhere I would go and eat at again.
Cafe2go (at Flamingo)
5 am pizzas are our waking up in Vegas tradition and the best place to grab a 5 am pizza is at Cafe2go in the Flamingo. $7 a slice or $22 for a full pizza they are simply incredible. Huge slices which are topped with an assortment of different toppings and lots of cheese. We always sprinkle chilli flakes and parmesan on top for that amazing kick.
They also serve really tasty breakfast sandwiches which are in fact big enough to share. Their Bugsy Breakfast Sandwich or the Flamingo Breakfast Sandwich is my go-to. Lots of filling is served between two rounds of croissant for a truly delicious flavour ($11-$13).
The cafe also serves granola and yoghurt pots and sandwiches. If you’re staying in the Flamingo or Linq it is a great place to pop in for a morning snack or late-night pizza if you need fast food in Vegas.
