Nando’s goes vegan with new menu

You didn’t read that wrong, Nando’s goes vegan with the new menu. This Summer, on the same day as National Vegetarian Week, launched, Nando’s launched their new vegetarian and vegan menu with a bang. We headed to the Nando’s restaurant in Sunderland to check out the new menu additions. As well as some classic vegetarian favourites.

I mean you have to always start with pitta, hummus and peri-peri drizzle right?

Sides

  • Grains ‘n Greens – This dish boasts a hearty helping of mixed grains, beans and corn, served on a bed of baby spinach, and topped with long stem broccoli.
  • Saucy Spinach – Wilted baby spinach in a spicy tomato and coconut sauce served with chickpeas.
  • Long Stem Broccoli – Served simply.

Fino Sides

Roasted Sweet Potato & Butternut Squash – Served with wilted spinach and a sprinkle of feta cheese.

All of the new sides are great alternatives to chips if you’re looking to reduce your calorie intake or looking to switch up the flavours a little. The Saucy Spinach was my favourite and will be sure to make it on my next Nando’s order. The greens ‘n’ grains were also a good choice, with a variety of different flavours and textures to make the dish more exciting.

Burgers, Pittas & Wraps

From the burgers, pittas and wraps section there were three different vegetarian options these were;

Sweet Potato & Butternut With red pepper, onion, edamame beans and a hint of smoked paprika.

Supergreen – Full of the green stuff; broccoli, edamame beans and kale with a touch of mint.

From those who chose the sweet potato and butternut, they all commented that they enjoyed it as it was flavoursome and filling. Some even stating that they’d swap their Nando’s chicken for this option!

The Beanies amongst us again commented that it was packed full of flavour and really filling. My Supergreen was nice, however, I wouldn’t choose to have it again as it was just like a minty mushy pea burger and a little boring after a few mouthfuls. I’d certainly try the Sweet Potato and Butternut on my next visit for a ‘cheeky Nandos’.

Nando’s have also introduced a special guest, the Veggie Cataplana. A generous helping of chickpeas, chargrilled veg and beans in a spicy tomato and coconut sauce, served on spicy rice and sprinkled with toasted coconut shavings. This was enough for a meal in itself or an alternative sharing side instead of spicy rice. I thoroughly enjoyed this dish and was probably my favourite of the main dishes.

Salads

Watermelon and Feta Salad

Billed as a mouth-watering combination of chargrilled slices of watermelon and pickled watermelon chunks served on a bed of baby spinach with black olives, cucumber and a generous sprinkling of feta.

As a huge fan of watermelon and feta salad, I found this dish extremely underwhelming the watermelon was lacking and with hardly any feta this was certainly a dish I wouldn’t rush to order.

House Salad

Cos lettuce tossed with crunchy cucumber and mixed baby plum tomatoes, topped with olives and mixed chargrilled peppers.

Grains ‘n Greens Salad

Similar to the side dish, Grains ‘n Greens is a hearty helping of mixed grains, beans and corn, served on a bed of baby spinach and topped with long stem broccoli. I personally prefer the grains ‘n greens on their own minus the salad as a side.

There was also I’ve always felt this with Nando’s salads that they’re underwhelming. Stick to proper meals and you can’t go wrong!

In case you’re wondering my usual Nando’s order is butterfly chicken (hot) with peri-peri chips and coleslaw with a beer. Totally different to the vegetarian feast, however, I certainly am going to switch up my future orders for saucy spinach and treat myself to a meat-free pitta on my next visit. What’s your regular go to order? Let me know below.

NEWS FLASH – Nando’s have confirmed that they’re opening the location across from Central Station which used to be home to The Laundrette so watch this space!
