If you’re looking for a gift for a loved one then perhaps something sentimental will be a perfect choice and what better way to say I love you than with a piece of jewellery? How to choose the perfect piece of jewellery to gift a family member, partner or friend is a hard task however we’ve got 3 top tips to help you make the decision process more simple when it comes to choosing.
3 Amazing Tips for Choosing a Piece of Jewellery for a Loved One
Who is it for?
First and foremost have a look at who you’re buying for, purchasing a piece becomes more meaningful when you take this into account. Think about their;
- Personal style – Think about their personal style, do they usually wear white gold, gold or silver pieces. Have you seen them wearing necklaces before if not would a necklace be a good choice?
- Lifestyle – How will the pieces fit into their lifestyle? For example, if your recipient has a manual job that requires them to get their hands dirty, would buying them a ring be appropriate?
- Birthstone – If you’re thinking about buying a piece with a stone in it, have a look at their birthstone and match the stone to their birth month. For example, my November birthday is an orange Topaz stone.
- Sizing – This is particularly important if you’re buying rings, but also equally as important for bracelets and bangles too. Check out the size of the item and the person’s size.
Getting what you pay for
If you are purchasing a diamond necklace online from a jewellery retailer like F.Hinds for example, the listings should always pertain as many details about the materials to help you make an informed decision on your budget. If you are in a store, always ask:
- Stamps and markings – The majority of jewellery has markings (such as Silver 925) that indicate the metal content and sometimes the manufacturer. Ask the sales assistant to show you these to make sure the markings match up to what you’re hoping to buy.
- Lab reports – If you are buying an item with a gemstone, more often than not gems come with lab reports that can tell you the size, qualities, and sometimes the value of the stone. These can help prove that you have an authentic gem that is worth what the retailer says. Particularly important if you’re buying a diamond engagement ring.
- Appraisals – If the gift you’re buying is particularly valuable, such as diamonds or for example a Rolex, consider getting an appraisal. This can be useful for insurance purposes too.
Look at your budget
If you have a particular budget for a gift for somebody then make sure that you stick to it. Sometimes it is tempting to just nudge over your budget by £5-£20 however you should take into account the two tips above and use them with this one to make sure that you are choosing the gift you want, for the person you’re buying for at the right price and it is good value for money.
If you’re purchasing online, why not search around for a coupon code. Many retailers offer a discount for signing up to their mailing list, or simply searching the brand name month and ‘discount code’ often brings up a money-saving code.
Similarly, if you’re in-store then make sure that you ask if that’s the best price. More often than not they will offer you a discount. Where I’m from, Newcastle, we have a saying ‘shy bairns get nowt’ and in short it means if you don’t ask you never get, I recently bought some carpets for my home and I asked what their best price was, they dropped the price by £500! I’ve heard stories of people asking for the best price in Tiffany’s on 5th Avenue in New York and getting great discounts. So remember to ask!
