I’m a massive believer in good quality supplements to help assist with your diet. In fact, I’m that much of a believer in them that when the BBC reported that everybody should be taking supplements, especially in the winter, I didn’t waste any time in browsing the internet for the different deals that companies like Activated You offers. Yes… I was this excited.
Excited in the fact that the research by scientists are now stating there are fewer nutrients in the food we eat and the lifestyles we live need more quality nutrients, minerals and vitamins.
The shops are stacked high with different supplements and vitamins that it’s extremely overwhelming and unless you know what you’re looking for it can potentially be a minefield.
3 Important things you need to know about Nutritional Supplements
Not fit for consumption
I recently was informed by an expert in the supplement industry that in the USA a test of 1,000 different brands was undertaken from store shelves from Macy’s to Walgreens and out of those 1,000 – over 800 different supplements were served a cease and desist order.
Why? Simply for claiming that they contained amounts of ingredients and they contained far less. Meaning that the supplements people were paying good money for were not doing what they were supposed to. This was a similar case to Protein World, a weight loss shakes brand.
Companies usually are supplement companies and the industry is not heavily regulated so if you’re serious about supplements that work and that are the best value for money then research companies that hold pharmaceutical licenses – this means that everything they have listed in their products must be within 2% of the quantities, therefore, meaning you know you’re getting a quality product.

What about your Omega from your fish oil? The smaller the fish the more concentrated fish oil you get, more concentrated = more effective. Most fish oils come from farmed fish in small cages which are susceptible to disease, when one fish gets a disease the fish farms spray the whole cage with chemicals to protect the fish, these chemicals are passed on to you through the oil. Instead opt for free-range, small fish oil supplements that contain fish oil from sardines that are responsibly sourced.
Fish oil supplements
A test you can do to see how effective your fish oils are is to pour hot water into a polystyrene cup drop your omega supplement in and time to see how long it takes for the oil to cut through the cup completely. If it takes longer than 90 seconds, honey you need to change your fish oil supplement.
Did you know to get your daily dose of Vitamin C in today’s food you’d have to eat 28 oranges? Now that’s good for thought.
Do your research before you go to grab your supermarket own brand supplements. They may be cheap but does that mean they’re necessarily good value?
