In recent years, Milan has received heavy investment from the Italian government to strengthen its transportation and culture within the city. Tourism in the city is continually booming. This is thanks to a strong reputation for great architecture, shopping and high fashion, and incredible food. If you’re planning a trip to Milan, here are some of the best things to do while you’re there.
Visit the Duomo
This is the city’s most important landmark. This amazing Gothic cathedral took hundreds of years to build. There are lots of things to see inside the cathedral, or you head to the top (via stairs or an elevator) you are able to see unrivalled views of the Milan skyline. The Duomo is smack in the city centre and a real spectacle, so why not hire a chauffeur in Milan to travel there in style?
8 Of The Best Things To Do In Milan
Enjoy Aperitivo
Aperitivo is a staple of Milanese life. This tradition began in the 19th century when Gaspare Campari decided to serve a drink that would stimulate rather than suppress the appetite. Best enjoyed between 7 and 9pm, relax with a drink and some nibbles before dinner, preferably somewhere outside. There are plenty of great places in the city to stop for an Aperitivo.
Visit the Navigli District
This a series of interlocking canals, which were partly designed by da Vinci. Around the canals, you’ll find lots of different bars and cafes that are very popular on a weekend evening. It is advised when exploring the Navigli District to join a boat tour to see the city from the water. If you don’t have your sea legs you can just choose a bar for a delicious glass of wine.
Booking.comSee The Last Supper in Milan
The Last Supper, by Leonardo da Vinci, is one of the most famous paintings in the entire world. Don’t miss the chance to see this amazing work of art in person while you’re in Milan. The work is unique compared to other frescoes, which are usually painted on wet plaster. This was done with tempera paints on a dry wall after the stone was sealed with dried plaster. This gives the paint greater luminosity. It’s quite a humbling experience as the crowd falls silent to witness this marvel.
Go to the Teatro Alla Scala
Since it was founded in the late 18th century, the Teatro Alla Scala is one of the finest opera houses in Europe. Soak up some culture with a night out at the opera, or visit the museum, where you can get a look at the famous red and gold interior. If you take the bus tour of the city you’ll discover lots of interesting facts about the opulent opera hall.
Visit the San Siro Stadium
This is the largest stadium in Italy, and one of the largest in Europe, which shows just how popular the city’s two football teams are. Watch AC Milan or Inter play here, or if football isn’t your thing, the stadium also hosts a lot of concerts. Past concerts here included Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, and Jay-Z.
Relax at the QC Termemilano
This spa is housed in a former tram depot. It has several saunas and a luxurious tea room. The most magical part though is the underground lair. Here you will find a maze of stone rooms with warm baths, cold baths, geyser pools, and a jacuzzi waterfall.
Visit Sforzesco Castle
The castle was built in the 15th century by Duke Francesco Sforza. It’s now home to several museums, important artworks and relics, and lovely walks through the courtyards.
Have you been to Milan? If so I’d love to hear where else you recommend in the comments below. If you’ve found this article of any value, I’d love for you to share it with your friends and family and across social media.
Milan is a beautiful city, good for long walks, but unfortunately, it also have a negative side (a lot of pickpockets and thieves) that doesn’t allow you to enjoy this city fully… I visited Milan for the first time in January, but my next Italy’s ”must-visit” is Rome! I have heard only good things about Rome! I hope it will be like that!
You’ll love Rome, I really enjoyed it, hopefully Coronavirus will die down in the next few weeks so you can plan to visit. I’d recommend staying away from the train station and be vigilant here too as there are also pickpockets
Milan sounds like such a fabulous place to visit! I love the idea of aperitivo in the evenings, sitting outside, having a drink, relaxing and watching the world go by sounds perfect. Also the spa would be exactly my kinda thing, it sounds heavenly. Thank you for sharing your recommendations and such gorgeous photos too! <3 xx
