Just for total transparency here before we take a look at one of the most Instagrammable pubs in Newcastle, The Woodmans Arms. I have to let you know that it is owned by my boyfriend’s best friend. However, there has been absolutely no discussion about posting any review and regardless of this connection or not I bloody love the place. So I’m going to share why you need to take a trip to see for yourself.
Nestled off the beaten track across the water in Wickham. A short drive from Newcastle’s city centre is multi-award winning gastro pub The Woodmans Arms. Taken over by Chris and Nyomi only 18 months ago the venue is fast gaining popularity and momentum. For its quirky decor (which FYI is utterly and totally Instagrammable) as well as it’s incredible food.
Offering dog-friendly dining, private dining and boasting a beautiful terrace for when the weather is good. It’s hard not to see why the pub is continually packed out, especially on a Sunday.
Sunday Dinner at The Woodmans Arms Wickham, Newcastle
With great food, great atmosphere and great people ethos, it certainly is one of the most relaxing places to kick back after a busy day or enjoy on the weekend.

Pub classics with a twist
The food menu is extensive with a range of traditional pub classics served with a twist and more unique dishes to tempt the fine diners too. All at reasonable prices. Burgers start from £10.95, Log Fire Pizzas from £7.95 and even Steaks from £18.95. It’s all absolutely delicious food that certainly won’t break the bank.
We particularly like to go on a Sunday when they have a smaller menu serving their famous Sunday Dinners. Which you can vote for in the ‘Best Sunday Dinner’ category in The Observer’s Food Awards here. Sunday Dinner starts at just £11.95 (£8.95 for the Vegetarian option). I highly recommend the Beef Brisket, it’s so tender and melts in your mouth. All served with a hearty portion of vegetables and a huge Yorkshire Pudding with lashings of gravy.
If you’re not a fan of Sunday Dinner or don’t fancy the beef, gammon, lamb, pork, chicken or the vegetarian nut roast option. Then you can choose something from their scaled-back menu on a Sunday. The log fire pizza oven is always fired up and the pizzas are incredible.
Save room for dessert
Got room for dessert? I quickly suggest you find space as they are absolutely amazing! Some classic favourites and some twists on the traditional desserts will have you stuck for choice. So why not order a couple and share? The cheesecake and the sundaes are without a doubt our favourites.
Gluten-free or vegan? The Woodmans Arms is totally inclusive all you need to do is ask for their dishes to suit your diet.
What I particularly love about the Woodmans Arms is not only the food and the atmosphere but the passion they have for local produce. Sourcing the ingredients that are prepared and served on your plate from local suppliers. From local butchers to fish from the North Atlantic, the team at The Woodmans Arms really care about what’s served. I love the behind the scenes of all of this on their Instagram account which if you don’t follow you totally should (even though it’ll make you super hungry).
I genuinely haven’t been asked to say this, and wholeheartedly believe that if you’re looking for somewhere to grab some really great food that you won’t be disappointed in then you simply must visit The Woodmans Arms in Wickham, Newcastle. It really is my favourite pub in the North East.
