It’s going to be an action-packed weekend. In the weekend where the world is watching Prince Harry wed Ms Markle, we’re going to be at the hallowed ground go St. James’ for a weekend of toys, conversions and some serious kicks.
With a family of Rugby fans, the weekend is fun for all the family. If you’re new to rugby, the Magic Weekend is well, magic really for getting your taster of what League rugby is all about.
We’ve got 3 top tips on how to make the most out of Magic Weekend;
Arrive early for all the fun
In the Fan Zone which is located just outside of St James’ Park (next to the metro station – which is your best method of transport to the ground if you’re coming into the city. The ground is actually in the city centre so is within walking distance wherever you are), there’s a whole host of things happening. From goodies being handed out, to games and challenges make sure you head up early so that you can fully take in all of the atmosphere.
Test your reactions with a ‘catch me quick’ game with Dacia ambassadors Paul Sculthorpe MBE and Kylie Leuluai. Join Scott Quinnell, who has been travelling around Europe in his Sky Sports FanVan motorhome as he talks to fans. In need of a free drink, haircut or beard trims?
ManVan will be exclusively offering these to League members, as well as advice on dealing with mental health issues. Can you test your nerve with the intense Buzz Wire game from Northern? Last year we made the most of Bachelors High Striker game, this year they’re back with a brand-new passing game. How will you fair?
More fun.
Finally, there’s a thriller from Patient Claim Line. Can you cut it at the top level as you’re put in the referee’s shoes with this decision-making game and all new spinning wheel?
Make sure you catch a glimpse of the stage where throughout the day there’ll be some Rugby greats giving a bit of punditry, talking about their careers and interacting with the crowd. There’s also merch stalls and stands from a whole host of brands including RL Cares, Odd Balls, Newcastle Thunder, Rhino Rugby League.
The Fan Zone is open Saturday 11am-6:30pm and Sunday 11am-5pm and is well worth enjoying a piece of the action.
Don’t forget that at halftime on the pitch there’s also lots going on with the sponsors too!
Plan your Magic meals
If you’re going hardcore and watching all 7 games, you’re going to need to be refuelled after all the excitement. Whilst inside the ground you can enjoy a pie and pint, it’s probably not going to fulfil the rumble in your stomach.
Our League members can receive discounts both inside and outside of the stadium. Become an Our League member here for free now.
Receive 5% off all food and drink inside the stadium with the app & other discounts around the city. Highly recommended is The Laundrette which is opposite Central Station (5-minute walk from the ground – if that!). There are deals at Marco Pierre White inside Hotel Indigo, The Hudson, The Keel Row (that’s your Wetherspoons if you must know), The Alchemist, Tiger Tiger, Aspers Casino and many more.
If you have a day ticket you’re free to go in and out of the stadium as you please. There are also some great Chinese buffets in China Town. The Goose, The Percy and The Gate all are local match day favourite watering holes and with The Grey Quarter inside Eldon Square, you’re not going to go wrong in the surrounding area of the grounds. Before you ask, there’s also a plethora of kebab shops for post Rugby food too!
Celeb spotting weekend.
Last year when we walked through the Fan Zone my youngest cousin of the two had to pick his jaw up off the floor. He was surrounded by ‘celebrities’ and sports stars. Magic Weekend brings out all the greats to Newcastle so don’t be surprised when you see your favourite Rugby League or Union star milling about. Footballers are also partial to a little bit of Magic Weekend too.
Most of them are happy enough to pose for pictures and sign autographs, just remember they’re here too to enjoy the weekend and the fun on the field!
However, you spend it, just enjoy it and remain safe. Enjoy our beautiful city and Rugby fans, let’s have a Magic Weekend!
