Guest Post: 9 Must Visit Spots in Quito, Ecuador

Today we’ve got a guest post coming from the fabulous Jazmin at Travel to Blank. Having travelled to over 40 countries she’s a serious contender for top wanderlust destinations and today she’s written us a post to kindly give us an insight into the top 9 places you must visit in Quito, Ecuador. Both her and I hope that you really enjoy the 9 destinations she’s highlighted.


1. La Virgen del Panecillo

The virgin is a stunning monument located on a hill that divides the North and South sides of Quito. It is a beautiful monument, from which you get a great panoramic view of all of Quito.

2. Monumento de la Mitad del Mundo

Make sure not to miss the Mitad del Mundo monument, it is a great place to enjoy the feeling of being in the middle of the world. You can also enjoy some traditional food while taking photos of the llamas. Do keep an eye out for the national dish of Quito though, roasted guinea pig.

3. Basílica Voto Nacional

The Basílica Voto Nacional has an amazing view of historic downtown Quito and the city in general. It is a must when visiting Quito.

4. Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús

This Baroque church is considered the most beautiful church in Latin America because of its stunning gold interior. To make it even more interesting, the outside is made of volcanic stones.

5. Tour Palacio de Carondelet

Take a tour of the presidential palace to get a glimpse into the heart and history of the Ecuadorian government. You can sign up for the tour at a small booth to the left of the building, and make sure to bring your ID or passport to get in.

6. Calle de la Ronda

Calle de la Ronda is a pedestrian road where you can stroll through the history of Old Town Quito and enjoy the beautiful downtown architecture. When visiting la Ronda, you must try the Canelazo, which is the typical alcohol drink of the city. It is made with sugar cane alcohol and fruit juice. It is the perfect place to enjoy some nightlife of the city.

7. TelefériQo de Quito

The Quito TeleferQo is a great way to enjoy a panoramic view of the city. It is also located on the edge of the Pichincha Volcano, so is a great place to do some hiking and see the Andes.

8. Plaza de la Independencia

The Plaza de la Independencia is where the the Quito Cathedral, the Carondelet palace and the Arzobispo’s palace and the municipality offices are located. It is the heart of Quito and you can feel it as you walk around. Downtown is full of pickpockets, so it is recommended to always have your valuables in a safe place.

9. Templo de la Patria

Templo de la Patria is a great museum where you can learn more about the history of Ecuador and its struggle for independence. It is in front of La Virgen del Panecillo. It can be a little dangerous to get there, so it is strongly recommended to visit with a guide. The entrance is free and the tour takes around 30 minutes including taking some photos.
