9 Things To Think About When Choosing the Perfect TV Unit

Buying a TV unit takes more time and thinking than you may expect. Considering it will be a piece of furniture that will be a focal point for a room and often be one of the most significant pieces of furniture, too, some thought needs to go into which one you choose.

Whether you find one while looking for entertainment consoles for sale or you decide to modify one yourself, here are a few of the critical aspects you need to remember when choosing a TV unit.

9 Things To Think About When Choosing the Perfect TV Unit

Size

The first thing you need to consider is the size of the unit. This is a two-fold process as you will first need to find one that is big enough for the TV you have and possibly big enough to hold an even bigger TV if you choose to get one.

The second part is that it needs to be the right size for the room. Many people make the mistake of buying furniture that is too big or too small, and it will either make your room feel empty or overly cluttered.

Height

The next thing you need to consider is the height of the unit. It can get very uncomfortable sitting with your head back or forward for too long, and getting a unit that is too short or too tall will cause this.

The best thing to do is to sit on the sofa or chair you will watch TV in and simply measure how high the TV must be so that your head is at a comfortable angle. While it may be tempting to get some large and ornate, your neck will thank you for getting something that is the right height.

Weight

One aspect that many seem to forget is the weight of the unit you are buying. While most people will have a delivery team bring and move the unit to your house, at some point, you are going to have to move it yourself; either because you need to clean or you dropped something behind it.

A beautiful oak unit will look fantastic but will be far too heavy for you to move; therefore, the best test is to try picking it up while you are buying it. This easy test will give you an idea of how heavy it is and how easy it is to move.

Shape

Much like how size is essential when choosing a unit, so is the shape. The shape of the unit will determine how it fits in the room and flows with the other furniture. If you have a lot of curves, something with hard, straight lines and edges just won’t fit in.

The shape is also important for placement. If the only place you can put the unit is in a corner, for instance, a long rectangular unit isn’t going to fit in the space at all.

Style

Next, you need to choose a style. Is the TV unit going to match your existing furniture, or is it going to be something wholly different from what you have? The other question you could ask is, how hard or easy is it to turn it into a style I like?

A wooden unit is easy to paint or stain, and any knobs and handles are relatively easy to replace too. This means that sometimes it is better to buy a unit you customize as opposed to trying to find one that is in the style you want.

Storage Options

You are more than likely going to need your TV unit to hold more than just your TV. You would want space for a TV box, gaming console, or maybe your collection of DVDs and a DVD player; no matter what it is, you need the storage space.

The difference here is choosing between an actual TV unit and a simple stand. One will have shelving and cupboards, while the other will only be able to hold the TV and not much else.

Build

Not all TV units are built equally, and some will be able to hold much more weight than others. If this unit is going to have to hold your entire entertainment system and accessories, it is probably better to spend the extra money on something sturdier.

Remember, though, a sturdier unit is going to be much heavier and harder to move and oftentimes will be a lot bigger.

Versatility

Depending on your house or apartment size, you will most likely need your furniture to be multi-purpose. While a TV unit can’t also act as a table, for instance, it can act as a bookcase or something similar.

Ease of Access

An aspect that is usually forgotten about is how easy it is to access the back of the unit. You are going to need to plug in and move all types of cables and cords around, and you don’t want to have to move the unit all the time to reach them.

Look for something that makes cable access and management easy, as it will save you a ton of time and hassle in the long run.
