intu’s Metrocentre opened in 1986 and has over 370 shops which occupy over 200,000 m2. Which made it the largest shopping centre at the time when it opened. A title it held until the opening of Westfield in Shepherd’s Bush in 2008. With nearly 400 stores however, Metrocentre seriously packs a punch when it comes to shopping, especially around Christmas time.
With an array of new retail stores recently opened we headed along to check out those all-important brand new brands that are paving their way and opening new stores in Gateshead’s pride and joy. This comes at the same time as Mike Ashley (you may know his name as the owner of Sports Direct and Newcastle United) hit back at suggesting a tax on etailers to save the high street and shopping complexes.
In agreement, there is nothing better than heading to the stores to check out the new arrivals. Riding on Metrocentre’s famous children’s train we headed to Hotel Chocolat to discover their introduction of ice cream to their store. Although Hotel Chocolat has been a firm favourite in the mall for a number of years they are constantly breaking chocolate boundaries. Or if we’re getting Willy Wonka here, shattering the glass ceiling in the elevator.
With their new product launches from chocolate-infused liqueurs to their coconut ice cream, there’s always something new and exciting going on in store. Find Hotel Chocolat in the Green Mall.
GStar RAW admittedly is a store that I haven’t visited now for a number of years, however, their expansive denim collection is one that opened my eyes. Being extremely fussy when it comes to denim jeans to see a huge variety of styles and cuts has given me all the feels to go and check out their jeans. Stocking ladies sizes in a 22-36” waist they are exceptionally inclusive of size.
The store is predominantly menswear with the jean collection alone tripling that of the ladies wear. Edgy and cool this brand is making waves with shoppers looking for great quality denim apparel at fantastic prices. Find GStar RAW in the Lower Platinum Mall.

The last time I went into Quiz, I was probably 14. I’ve just turned 28. Recently I’ve been seeing adverts and collaborations with celebrities everywhere. With friends telling me Quiz have upped their game. Launching a brand new look, moving from their old location to their larger, more prominent store not only has their location changed but so has their vibe.
With fast fashion still at the forefront of everything they do, their styling has become more sophisticated and on-trend. With their prices still remaining exceptionally low and their quality improving. Great for daywear or nightwear Quiz have really impressed me in terms of finding that ‘nice top’ to go with jeans and boots when you’re heading out with the girls. Or equally their more dressy pieces for special occasions without breaking the bank. Find Quiz in the Red Mall.
Undoubtedly the most hotly anticipated store opening of 2018, the Victoria’s Secret Angels flew into Gateshead late November with a monumental explosion of lace, feathers and sparkle. The dual-store which is home to both Victoria’s Secret and the PINK brand is a girl’s haven.
