Why You Should Always Take Your Annual Leave

All companies offer annual leave. It’s a legal right that an employer must provide. However, many employees don’t take all their annual leave. When you have a stressful job with a heavy workload, you might feel as though you don’t have the capacity for time off.

But, no matter your workload, it’s important to take time away from work. Here’s why you should always take your annual leave.

Reduce Health Problems

Overworking can increase the likelihood of developing health problems. Those with a chronic illness or health condition should be especially careful (what is PrEP?). When you are constantly stressed and tired, you can become run down. Overworking can lead to poor circulation, weight gain, heart problems and higher cholesterol levels – to name a few. So, be kind to your body and take the leave you’re entitled to. If not, you might have to take sick leave anyway.

A Better Night’s Sleep

Many people find that they don’t sleep well in the week. They stew over work-related issues and find it hard to switch off. Long hours at the office, late networking events and a long commute can mean that you don’t have much time to relax after work. So, many people tend to rely on weekends to catch up on sleep and relaxation. But this is only two days. Taking plenty of annual leave ensures that you catch up on well needed sleep and relaxation.

Mental Health

Our mental health can suffer when we don’t take our annual leave. We feel stressed by work and don’t think about our own needs. By taking your annual leave, you allow your brain to focus on other elements of your life and reduce brain chatter. A week abroad or simply spent relaxing will make your brain feel healthier and happier. But, of course, the answer to mental health isn’t that simple. If you’re struggling, consider speaking to a therapist.

A Break From Screens

We all spend too much time looking at screens. But this is particularly problematic if your job is entirely computer-based. Your eyes might become fuzzy or lose focus. You might get regular headaches or new glasses. Taking annual leave means taking time away from the office – and away from screens. Help your eyes by trying to avoid personal screen use when you’re on leave. That means putting your phone on silent and not spending the whole week on Netflix.

Family Time

Those who overwork and don’t take annual leave will struggle to see their family and friends as much as they should. No one should work all the time. Take your annual leave to strengthen relationships and spend time with loved ones.
