Of course, it would be virtually impossible to visit each of the 27 stops in one evening. So heading to 4 locations this year for the preview we decided upon ttonic for a drink to begin the evening, followed by The Looking Glass for starters and 2 Church Lane for mains, finishing off at newly opened Pati Cake Patisserie on Tunstall Road for some desserts.

ttonic

Synonymous with summer day drinks and shisha on the terrace, ttonic have recently undergone a refurbishment indoors to create a swanky looking, cosmopolitan bar area. With newly upholstered seating and a twinkling ceiling adorned in draped wisteria and faux leafy greens, ttonic has a cool, edgy vibe. Introducing a small menu including a vegan mushroom ruffle risotto and beetroot and cheese wrap to complement their superfood infusions including the cucumber gimlet and the I can’t bee-lieve it cocktails.

The Looking Glass

Based on the book of the same name expect to find opulent woodland decor, magnifying glasses all over and enchanted Instagrammable spots everywhere you go in The m00-=09-=Looking Glass, located at Athenaeum Street, Sunniside. This gorgeous cocktail bar serves up some great dishes too including their two-course Sunday lunch menu for £10.95.

Their cocktail menu boasts an incredibly unique concept. Choose a ‘style’ of cocktail from the menu which sounds like something you’d like. There are no names or ingredients shown just a description of flavours. Then when you’ve chosen your style you’ll be asked to draw a card from the deck this then shows you your choice of cocktail. This is a great idea for an exploration of tastes and cocktails you usually wouldn’t choose, but in actual fact, you’d probably love.

Team your cocktails with one of Lookin Glass’ amazing sharing boards served on a slice of tree for that enchanted feel. Jam-packed with charcuterie meats and cheeses, pate, flatbreads, olives and more. This would be an excellent (and enchanting) experience to grab the girls for cocktails and picky bits.

2 Church Lane

Perfectly situated across the road from the Empire Theatre, 2 Church Lane serves up some mighty impressive burgers and fully-loaded fries. From their Tex Mexx burger stuffed with beef patties, nacho chips, a thick slice of chorizo and oozing with cheese and guacamole to their Mackem and Stackem burger, The Big Breakfast Burger which you can imagine is full of breakfast goodness and even Pizza Burgers. The choice is wildly expansive and 2 Church Lane really pull out the stops with all of their burger creations.

Another speciality is their loaded fries. The garlic steak and cheese are a massive hit with tender strips of steak cooked perfectly soaked in garlic butter and lathered in cheese. Their parmo fries feature breaded chicken and cheese and their cheeseburger fries are served with a crumbled burger, a hearty serving of cheese with special burger sauce.

Their sides are not to be missed too, huge cheeseburger spring rolls, ginormous mozzarella sticks and halloumi fries with a sriracha dip were all totally unnecessary but gave 2 Church Lane that awesome American burger feel. If you like a fully stacked burger, this is your go-to place for Sunderland Restaurant Week.
