Nu chef, Nu menu

Nu to Go has just taken on a new chef and have really honed in their menu. Launching a more sophisticated and of course even more delicious menu than they previously boasted. With dishes such as Cauliflower Satay, Cuban Salmon Fillet and Tabbouleh to name but a few you can really see why they are going from strength to strength.

The aim of Nu to Go (if the name doesn’t suggest it already) is that food is cooked fresh to order and in a speedy time. We opted for the Moroccan Salmon and Couscous (£9.50/£7 to takeaway), Jalapeno Pepper-Jack Chicken Burger (£7.50/£6 to takeaway) and the Korean BBQ Lean Beef Burger (£7.50/£7 to takeaway). For our sides, we selected the Grilled Halloumi with Tomato Compote (£3), Coconut Chilli Rice (£3) and Nachos & Dips – Guacamole, Tzatziki, Cheddar and Chilli Jam (£4.50) to share.

Our Nachos arrived first and were a perfect size to nibble between the three of us. There were plenty of nachos, and the guacamole and chilli jam was served in perfect quantities. The Tzatziki was a refreshing change from the traditional soured cream, as it was lighter and more flavoursome. Cheese is my vice, and usually, nachos lack a load of cheese, however, Nu to Go ensured that the perfect amount of cheese-covered the nachos well. This is a great side or starter and is certainly on my order next time I visit.

The Moroccan Salmon and Couscous

This was served with broccoli, red pepper, hummus and kale pesto. The vivid colours were enchanting and it certainly looked delicious. Newcastle Food Experience commented on how tasty the different elements were and how well they worked together. In particular the kale pesto and red pepper hummus which were the selling points of the dish.

Jalapeno Pepper-Jack Chicken Burger

This was served with pepper-jack cheese, jalapenos, chipotle mayo on a brioche bun with a side of sweet potato fries. Really fancying some chicken and of course being a lover of burgers I opted for the chicken burger, however, Chloe did suggest her personal favourite (and most popular choice) was the beef. The other half of Newcastle Food Experience was opting for the Beef so I chose chicken for variation.

The chicken was cooked well (either poached or grilled – with no grease), and dressed with plenty sauce. The chipotle and the pepper-jack cheese along with the jalapenos gave it a really tasty kick. As a fan of spice, it was just the right spice to be hot without being uncomfortably hot.

Served with sweet potato chips which were nice, however, in my honest opinion, sweet potato chips of any variation are not my most favourite choice of side. We did have grilled halloumi and coconut chilli rice as accompaniments too. Although we didn’t actually need them (they were welcome though) as the portions at Nu to Go are extremely generous and filling.

I personally enjoyed my chicken burger more so than the leading chicken restaurant (that rhymes with Man-though) and knowing it’s a cleaner option, would opt to head to Nu to Go before heading to the cinema.

Korean BBQ Lean Beef Burger

Served with Asian slaw and Korean BBQ sauce on a brioche bun again with sweet potato fries. The burger looked really lean and tasty. The sauce was full of flavour and Newcastle Food Experience did comment that it reminded them of their travels to Asia.

Again a large portion size, served with a side salad, for £7.50 both the burger dishes are great value for money.

Nu to Go Sides

We opted for the grilled halloumi with tomato compote which was undoubtedly the highlight of the entire meal. As a huge cheese fan, and in particular halloumi I thoroughly enjoyed the large ‘fries’ with the homemade tomato compote. If you’re a restaurant reading this, let Nu to Go be a lesson of how to serve grilled halloumi, none of this breaded rubbish, simply grilled the way it’s intended. The tomato compote was really tasty and worked exceptionally well with the halloumi.

The final side was the chilli coconut rice, I wasn’t sure what to expect with this, however, it was nice. Not something I’d probably re-order only simply because it was too sweet for my taste. It was, however, a perfect accompaniment to my chicken burger as I am partial to half chips half rice.

There’s always room for pancakes

Despite being suitably full from our mains and sides, as well as our smoothies and charcoal lemonade. Which you must try, it is absolutely incredible and I need in my life daily! We were served Protein Pancakes (£7.50/£6.50 takeaway). Of course, you know, there’s always room for pancakes, right?

Served with Greek yoghurt, banana, blueberries, strawberries and peanuts we dug in. Yoghurt wouldn’t be a topping I’d usually opt for. It did, however, work exceptionally well with the pancakes and complemented the fruit.

The three of us all agreed though that the peanuts on the top detracted from the delicious fruity flavours as they were too big a pieces and all agreed that we would have preferred either crushed pistachios or flaked almonds in place of these nuts. The pancakes though are reason enough to visit Nu to Go. They are incredible. You can choose from a selection of different toppings including banana, peanut butter and chocolate or crispy bacon, eggs and maple syrup.

If you’re looking for somewhere serving up clean food, delicious treats and with a friendly welcome vibe then I strongly recommend a trip to Nu to Go. Chloe and Darren are exceptionally passionate and proud of what they have created and rightly so!
