Thaikhun Metrocentre Review

The Metrocentre is located just across the Tyne to  Newcastle and plays home to a plethora of different restaurants. In fact, you can dine around the world under one roof with all the cuisines that the shopping complex offers. We headed to Thaikhun a traditional Thai restaurant to see if their take on traditional dishes could transport us from Tyneside to Thailand.

Thaikhun is situated in ‘The Qube’ section of the Metrocentre, which is the food quarter. Arriving to traditional decor, including their own Tuktuk. We were seated at a booth and with the decor and hustle and bustle of the atmosphere. Very traditionally like a Thai street food restaurant we were indeed felt like we had been transported to an Asian side street full of local delicacies.

Opting for the Full Moon cocktail (£5) as we perused the very traditional menu it was served with a couple of flying saucers. These two flying saucers probably had the most flavour in the whole drink. It was more like a waining crescent moon than a full moon! As it lacked flavour and had enough ice to sink the Thai-tanic there was little room for any liquid.

Thai feast of a menu

Selecting from the menu the Beef Stir-fried Noodles (£12.50) and the Prawn Massaman Curry, served with Jasmine rice (£14) we also opted for a side of Skin on fries with Sriracha Mayo (£3.75).

Pad-Thai is one of my favourite dishes and was a close contender for selection. However, the Prawn Massaman really stood out, and rightly so. Jam-packed with onions and King Prawns with a generous helping of sauce the Massaman was flavoursome and filling. Served with a portion of Jasmine rice which I tipped in to absorb the sauce this was a great choice and comes highly recommended if you’re a fan of curry or looking for a dish with a little kick.

The Beef Stir-fried noodles were also exceptionally tasty and again, a generous portion with a lot of beef. If you’re new to Thai food but are a fan of Chinese, in particularly chow mein then this tasted very similar. Both of the dishes had been freshly prepared to order and the presentation was really lovely. The palm leaf under the noodles really added to the traditional feel that this chain is trying to give.

The fries came a little after our order and whilst the Sriracha mayo was absolutely delicious. The fries were still hard and could have done with a few more minutes cooking. They probably, if cooked properly would have been a nice side addition. However, on this occasion, we didn’t rate them at all.

Delicious Desserts

Finally, we opted to share the Buttermilk Pancake Stack (£5). Served with Nutella and a scoop of ice cream. We probably didn’t need these after our large portion sizes. However, our sweet teeth craved them. They were proper American style thick, fluffy pancakes with a generous dollop of Nutella, which by the time the stack arrived at the table, had melted perfectly. The ice cream scoop on the top was a perfect addition. These were so so delicious, however, we couldn’t have managed a full portion each.

Overall Thaikhun was really tasty, the food was fresh and a generous serving comparable to the price. There was plenty of meat in the mains and a huge amount of sauce on the desserts. We thoroughly enjoyed the food with the exception of the cocktail and fries and would certainly come back if we were grabbing a relaxed bite in the Metrocentre whilst shopping or perhaps before a film.
