Tips for a better night sleep ft Leesa Mattresses

Do you remember back in August when I had a nasty accident at my best friend’s wedding? Slipping on some liquid on the floor and breaking not just my elbow but my wrist too. Since then I’ve really struggled to sleep.

I knew that it was probably the mattress, that’s why when I discovered Leesa I just knew that I had to take up their offer to test out their mattresses.

The most poignant thing about Leesa is that for every 10 mattresses they sell they donate 1, which with an epidemic of poverty and homelessness is such a feel-good factor when purchasing a mattress. You’re helping to donate to somebody less fortunate.

Leesa simply focuses on doing one thing and one thing exceptionally well. You’ll not find frames on their site only mattresses and their newly launched duvet set.

With mattresses starting at £399 I wanted to see if they really were good value for money. Firstly though, I needed to address the situation I had with my sleeping. It couldn’t just be my mattress, could it?

I found 5 things that helped improve my sleep immediately.

Turn off all devices

That’s right, I sound like a nag, however, turning off all devices 30 minutes before I get into bed really helps relax my mind and help me wind down. The light of a smartphone has been scientifically proven to keep you awake longer. Switch it off before bed.

Turndown service

I’m kidding, we can’t have home turndown service (unless you’re either Kris, Khlo, Kourt or Kiki reading this then we gotcha). Instead, make sure you have clean sheets and a cosy duvet. It makes such a difference when you have fresh sheets. I now change my bed twice a week so my duvet covers and sheets are always fresh.

Turn it down

The heating, statistically the colder your room is the quicker you’ll initiate sleep. It’s been proven that your body temperature drops to when you’re starting the process of getting to sleep. That’s why you’re more than likely to fall asleep in a cooler room than a warmer temperature. With that said, you’ll also have a less disturbed sleep too.

Turn over

That’s right your sleeping position has a huge impact on how well you actually sleep. For those who sleep on their back, you’re winning this has been proven to be the best way to sleep and the worst…on your front! Trying to make adjustments to your sleep is difficult especially as you’re unconscious when you’re sleeping. However being mindful may have a positive effect and starting the evening off lying on your back make positively impact your sleeping.

Turn it up

Pumping aromatherapy oils into your bedroom before you go to sleep is another great way to calm and relax. I am a massive fan of the Amir Diffuser, although there’s a range of diffusers to suit your decor available from Amazon. Lavender oil is my favourite as it’s highly relaxing and I absolutely love the fragrance, bergamot works well too. Putting a diffuser on 30 minutes before bed can help fill the air with a relaxing scent to help you sleep.

The Leesa Effect

With all five of those sleeping tips put into practice, it was time to check out just how effective they were coupled with a new Leesa mattress. Arriving in an easy to carry box I transported my new double up to my room. Having already skipped my old mattress I lay the thin vacuum packed item on my bed frame. Cut the wrapper and watched it instantaneously grow. You’re supposed to leave your mattress for an hour before bed to fully expand and then it firms over the next couple of days.

I was absolutely amazed by the whole thing and then after leaving for a couple of hours, I returned up to my room to find a small Jack Russell had claimed the bed as his own. Personally and more importantly I genuinely have never had such a great sleep (as has Ziggy) and I do believe it’s down to ensure I have the perfect night time set up. I treated myself to some new pillows, a brand new duvet and sheets to really make falling asleep much easier. How do I know this? My Fitbit of course. Since owning a Leesa mattress my sleep quality has improved 43%, I’m now getting the recommended 8 hours sleep and my awake time has dropped significantly.

That break

The pains in my arm that was broken are alleviated on a morning too. Previously I’d wake up in sheer agony from my old mattress not being supportive enough, now my Leesa is like ‘I’ve got you boo’ with the meticulously designed 3 layer system within the mattress.

  • Lauter one; Cooling Avena® Foam. The 5cm Avena® foam top layer provides airflow for a cooler night’s sleep and enough bounce for freedom of movement.
  • Layer two; Pressure Relieving Memory Foam. The 5cm memory foam layer delivers the body contouring and pressure relief you’ve come to expect from memory foam.
  • Layer three; Dense Core Support. The 15cm base foam layer adds strength, durability and structure to support sleepers of all sizes, without feeling too firm.
