If you know me well enough you’ll know that there are 3 obsessions in my life. Vegas. Louboutins. Nutella. In that order. I’m a massive massive Nutella fan. That much so my best friend turned up at my house the other night with a jar branded with my name on it. Of course, the jar is empty now in case you were wondering.

Second obsession is a Mr Christian Louboutin. If it ain’t a red sole, well it ain’t a goal in my books! I am an avid fan and always ogling, deciding which excuse I can use next to treat myself!

My first love and true obsession, however, has to be 100% Sin City. I first fell in love in 2011 after a jaunt with my Mum after a family holiday in Florida for my 21st birthday. Everything about it is something special.

From the street entertainers, the flamboyance of the hotels. The different experiences that they all have to offer there really is something for everybody. After 4 trips to the desert and much more to come, I’ve so much to write (you know I could go on for days!) so I’ve narrowed it down to ‘My Top must see/do when in Vegas’

5) Wicked Spoon @ Cosmopolitan

Based on a recommendation by my Mum’s work colleague the first time we visited the fabulous Las Vegas we were told Sunday Brunch at the Wicked Spoon inside the Cosmopolitan was an essential and oh boy it was.

Opting for the Champagne Brunch we entered the buffet. My eyes lit up like Augustus Gloop entering Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory! There were so many different counters and an array of Global cuisine at your disposal to choose from, we were in heaven.

I’m usually funny about a buffet. You know with the whole the spoon’s been used in a different tray kind of thing. However, at the Wicked Spoon, everything is served in portions, in little copper pans or shot glasses. Amazing.

The champagne was great too it was bottomless so we kept drinking and drinking and drinking! It was only just after lunch we left after bloody Mary prawns, creamy leeks, any amounts of seafood and meats and of course a few cakes. What? We were on our holidays.

The evening buffet is also delicious (opted for a bottomless red wine that time) and my goodness I drank. However here’s an odd Nevada Law for you. The server cannot leave a bottle of wine on the table if there are less than 4 people sitting on the table. Yet it’s Sin City. Work that one out!

4) Shark Reef @ Mandalay Bay

Since I was a little girl, I’ve always been fascinated by sea life. Believe it or not, though, I’m frightened of the sea. When we were in Mexico I insisted we went on a glass bottom boat instead of snorkelling as I can’t bare anything touching me. Even in a swimming pool if something touches me I scream and I’m out of there!

Anyways, we decided to go to the Shark Reef and I was in awe with the most beautiful fish, stingray, sharks and octopuses. It was beautiful seeing the sharks and large tortoises swimming around in the reef.

Although it only took half an hour it was thoroughly enjoyable and a must see if you make your way to the Mandalay Bay Hotel.

3) Bellagio Fountains

This one goes without saying. There’s something super special about the fountains, they’re enchanting and no matter how many times you’ve seen them they still capture your full attention.

From opera to modern pop they have a routine for pretty much any genre. Going off every half an hour and positioned n the centre of the strip these really are a must-see tourist attraction.

With proposals galore happening around the fountains, gentlemen putting their arms around their wives, children oohing and awwwwing as the water shoots up into the air it’s hard not to get drawn in by the beauty of them.

2) Fremont Street Experience

The first time we went to Fremont Street my face twisted as I thought, this is going to be rubbish, just ancient casinos and lots of old folk. How wrong I was. Oh, how wrong I was.

Arriving by Deuce (my all-time favourite bus – I don’t do busses!) we stepped off the bus out into the city street and could immediately hear the music shaking the buildings, the crowds were thick and constant as we walked past Heart Attack Café and people on zip wires were flying across overhead.

Vicki Vegas and Vegas Vic, the icons of Nevada welcome you to Fremont and the neon lights were dazzling.

It was nearing 8 o’clock I remember on my first visit and those hoards of tourists stopped in their tracks and looked up, the light show was about to start. I’ve seen it four times now. The first time it was Queen’s we are the champions celebrating the heroes and veterans of the US military, second time the brilliance of songs from the 80’s echoed around the street and the crowd all sang in unison, the third light show was the Beatles and finally my favourite of them all a celebration of The Who were the crowd gathering who were going absolutely crazy.

There’s loads going on in Fremont from concerts and super modern casinos to street performers and freebies. From my twisty face initially it’s now become my essential must visit when in Vegas.

1) Grand Canyon & the Skywalk

If there’s ever such a sight to complete your life then this would be it. The twice I’ve been to the Canyon we’ve done the same excursion. We took the bus over past the Hoover Dam. Which is impressive to see in itself and then over to the Canyon to the West Rim to go over the Sky Walk.

If you’re afraid of heights I wouldn’t recommend. The U shaped glass bridge hangs over the Canyon at 4000 feet above the Colorado River. Watching the people come onto the bridge is hilarious as they panic being so high up but the views are incredible. Especially the first time we visited and an eagle swooped below us.

As part of the package, we paid for your lunch is included…at the Ranch. Now being a vegetarian you can imagine a cowboy’s dinner didn’t go down very well. At first, when the bus took us from the visitor centre to the Ranch I thought it wasn’t real. That there were employees whose role was to make it look more authentic. Oh no, the magician performing tricks. He’s banned from every casino on the strip for card counting. The cowboys eating their beans and grits amongst the tourists before they head off to round the cattle up.

There are many other options for different tours to different parts of the Canyon. Some by helicopter others have different itineraries. There’s a package to suit. It really is an incredible day and the sights are second to none!

If you’re thinking about a visit to the USA make sure you schedule the best strip in the desert into your plans because you won’t want to miss out!

  1. Last time I went to Vegas I was like 8- Can’t wait to go back and try some of the stuff I couldnt do before! That buffet at the wicked spoon sounds amazing!

  2. Your love of Las Vegas really shines through in this post Laura. It’s about 12 years since we visited Las Vegas so its great to have some up to date recommendations for a future visit. I’d definitley try the Champagne brunch and will probably head to see the Grand Canyon next time. A highlight for me was the revolving Top of the World restaurant at Stratosphere Tower…just spectalcular! 🙂
